Good Gaming Laptops Review
By Tina Kachan
Good gaming laptops are one of the most heavily engineered portable electronic devices made these days. Right now, they are at a level that seemed unreachable five years ago. The concept itself is already a contradiction. They need to have a strong hardware, but at the same time they have to be light enough for carrying it to your friend's house for playing. Although about this last part, since most of good gaming laptops are complete desktop replacements they are considered to be „heavy“. Good gaming laptops today offer fantastic design, powerful processor and high resolution screens. All together, laptops which can handle almost anything. For starter, there are a few things you should consider when purchasing a gaming laptop:
- Good graphics card
- Big screen
- High amounts of RAM (at least 3GB)
- Good CPU
- Blu-Ray Room or DVD
- Hard drive space
- Wireless card for online games
One more thing, make sure that your laptop has a Windows operating system. Why? Because most of the games are made on Windows platform since 90% of anyone with a computer uses Windows. Overall, more things are available on Windows and game prices can be a little cheaper. And of course, get the latest Windows 7 operating system.
Good gaming laptops: Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q860
Overview:
With the new Qosmio X505-Q860, Toshiba has refocused this line on good gaming laptops, adding a new mobile Intel Core i7 CPU and Nvidia's GeForce GTS 250M graphics card (not th best one, but extremely close). It's a beast of a gaming laptop with 18.4-inch widescreen which is one of the biggest screens on laptops on the market these days, and Blu-Ray drive (Toshiba is finally on-board with that bandwagon). It is considered to be a complete desktop replacement which reflects on the laptop's weight (10 pounds without the power adapter) so it gets a minus for portability, but because of that you get a display with 1080p resolution.
About the design, it has a black/red palette and round chassis like on previous models but it is toned down a bit. The keyboard is comfortable, although the space bar could be bigger and has LED backlights which is awesome for night vision. Oddly, the touchpad is small for good gaming laptops which is inexplicable because there is plenty room. The big screen looks amazing, especially when playing HD video. Has a FireWire port which is very rare these days. The Qosmio X505 drained its battery in 1 hour and 53 minutes on the test while using 12-cell battery which is included. And considering that this one falls right into the category of desktop replacements, anything close to 2 hours is pretty good.
Pros:
- gorgeous 18.4-inch 1080p display
- top of the line components (including Intel Core i7)
- good hard drive
- LED backlit keyboard
Cons:
- battery life could be better
- small touchpad
- when pressed mute button beeps loudly
Other specifications:
- Price as reviewed/starting price: $1,889/$1,499
- Processor: 1.6GHz Intel Core i7 720QM
- Hard drive: 320GB 7,200rpm and 64GB SSD
- Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
- Networking: Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
Why is Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q860 among good gaming laptops? Answer: It is one of the first laptops with a mobile Core i7 processor, and it's fast.
Good gaming laptops: ASUS G73JH
Overview:
This is the latest gaming laptop in ASUS successful G-series product line. G73 weighs 8.5 pounds which is less then the previously listed laptops, but still not something you are going to whip out on a ride in a bus to write a quick e-mail. It has a „stealth look“ which is obviously under the influence of contemporary stealth aircraft. Ergonomics is enhanced by angled upward 5 degrees chassis. And has u rubber shell which adds to durability. Packed by 17.3-inch LED-backlit screen with a full HD (1920x1080) resolution and it is glossy which makes the colors more vibrant. It is very enjoyable to use for gaming and multimedia.
Viewing angles are somewhat average for good gaming laptops. The speakers get reasonably loud and there is measurable bass. The keyboard is comfortable to type on, it is backlit and looks good in the dark. The touchpad is big and has a matte surface which is great, but it is a little off-center to the left. The Mobility Radeon HD 5870 is the fastest single mobile graphics card available at this moment and backed with 8GB of RAM and a Core i7 processor, the laptop can handle almost any game on the market at the highest visual quality settings. Batter life is as tested 1 hour and 49 minutes which is nice for goog gaming laptops this size.
Pros:
- amazing screen
- fantastic performance
- includes mouse and backpack
- well-built
- good keyboard
- nice speakers
Cons:
- poor touchpad buttons
- could have added a few more input/output ports
Other specifications:
Price as reviewed/starting price: $1,695
Processor: Intel Core i7-720QM processor
Hard drive: Two 500GB 7200RPM hard drives (Seagate Momentus 7200.4/ST9500420AS) (Non-RAID)
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Networking: Built-in Bluetooth 2.1+EDR

Great review on gaming laptops! However, it must be said that I much prefer desktops to laptops, as you can get basically the same product for cheaper when purchasing it on a desktop.
Alas, many people like to game whilst on the move, and that's why I still am (at heart) a laptop fan.
